Expedition Grants

Awards to inspire early-stage research. Applications from small or medium-sized British expeditions are considered by the Trustees in April each year. They should meet the following criteria:

  • The expedition proposes to carry out scientific field research that responds to a clear local need, and demonstrates a collaborative approach to working with local scientists / institutions / communities
  • The host country is keen for the proposed research to be carried out and the results will be a welcome addition of knowledge on the subject(s) which already exists
  • The proposed research is using an integrated approach. Individual geological mapping projects and fieldwork for stand-alone dissertations are unlikely to be funded
  • The team comprises three or more members, based in a university or research institute, museum or similar not-for-profit agency. The majority of applicants should be students or recent graduates of UK universities
  • The majority of the team is studying, or has studied, subjects relevant to the expedition’s stated objectives
  • Preference will be given to teams involving local counterparts in the proposed research
  • The expedition has been well planned, has attainable objectives and a risk assessment including steps to mitigate any risks
  • The expedition minimises environmental impact – including carbon footprint and recognises where local capacity already exists
  • The application is accompanied by a supporting letter of reference from an academic who is familiar with and qualified to assess the need for the proposed research, its potential value and the ability of the team to carry it out

The Gilchrist Education Trust has a long history of supporting small student expeditions. The experience of conducting overseas fieldwork leaves a lasting impact, from collaborative research in unfamiliar cultures and environments to developing the skills and resilience needed to succeed in the workplace

University of Glasgow Thailand Expedition (funded 2025)

The expedition was conducted in collaboration with COREsea (Centre of Oceanic Research & Education, Southeast Asia), a marine conservation and research organisation based on Koh Phangan, which supports long-term ecological monitoring and conservation initiatives in the region. The University of Glasgow Thailand Expedition 2025 took place on Koh Phangan, Thailand, running from 13th June to 3rd August 2025. The expedition lasted just over seven weeks, with six weeks dedicated to intensive field-based research. There were eight team members.

“We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Gilchrist Educational Trust. Without this support, this expedition and the important research conducted would not have been possible. The funding enabled our team not only to carry out valuable scientific work, but also to gain an unforgettable field experience that has been instrumental in our academic and personal development”
