Individual Study and Travel Awards

We understand that even with the best planning, as students you can encounter unexpected financial challenges which threaten to prevent you from completing your degree.

Individual Study Awards are available to students who have made appropriate plans to fund their degree or higher education course but encounter unexpected financial difficulties that may affect their ability to complete it. Applicants will normally be in the last year of the course.

Travel Awards support students required, as part of their degree course, to undertake a short period of study abroad. Examples are the fieldwork necessary for a thesis or dissertation, or medical students’ elective.

Applicants must be full-time students enrolled at a British university. We do not give grants for foundation degrees until they have been converted to an honours degree.

Last year (March 2024-February 2025) we made a total of 59 individual awards totalling £33,790. Of these, 26 were Adult Study Awards and 33 were Travel Grants, including 18 Medical Electives. All grants ranged from £500 to £750.

Individual Study Award testimony

“This grant had a profound impact on both my studies and my wellbeing during university. In my final year, my Mum was diagnosed with cancer and was unable to continue working during her treatment, resulting in a significant loss of income for our family. This placed considerable financial strain and stress on me during the lead up to my final exams. Due to the demanding workload and long hours required by my course (especially in final year), it was extremely difficult to balance studying with paid work to cover my living costs. Receiving this grant greatly eased my financial burden and significantly reduced my stress in the lead-up to my final exams and allowed me to graduate on time.”

Travel Award testimony

“The generous grant for my travel elective was an invaluable support, without which I would not have been able to seize this exceptional learning opportunity. It enabled me to cover the admission fees for international elective students, granting me access to hospital placement, as well as essential expenses such as accommodation and transportation during my month in South Africa. This experience has greatly fueled my passion for pursuing a career in emergency medicine and provided me with a unique insight into the practice of this specialty on an international scale. The skills and knowledge I gained will undoubtedly be crucial for my professional development, as well as enriching my personal growth and creating lifelong memories.”
